MGAP provides each new adopter with a free pre-adoption online training course. The course includes audio as well as the video.You can sit down with a cup of tea and go through this at your own pace and view more than one time. You will gain skills and knowledge that will give you the tools and confidence to take you to the next level in dog knowledge and training. Once you have this ability you will be appling it to many different situations for years to come. There is also a section just for the children. This is fun for them, simple and they will learn so much valualbe information that will last a lifetime.
Please note, this is a course to teach the owners how dogs think and how to understand and train them more effectively. As well, you will learn all about the reitred racing greyhound and what the adjustment into pet life will be like. How they are different than other breeds and what you need to know to make the transition as smooth as possible for both dog and owners. Why is positive leadership so important and how can we get that? Many MGAP members have taken the course more than once, (at no charge) as it is that valuable. Even folks who have owed greys for many years and fosterd many times, go back again and take notes. It makes all the difference.

A little about our Childern's "LIVE" training session
"The policy of Maritime Greyhound Adoption Program, is not adopt to families with children under the age of 5, so the kids in the dog safety session can be anywhere from 5 - 12 or 13 years old. The first thing we do is watch "Every Picture Tells a Story - The Language of Dogs" video, then we go over the list of "Teresa's Bad Rules" and get them to ask any questions they have. We look at the pictures of safe and dangerous dogs and discuss how to tell the difference in each. We learn what "Be A Tree" means. Next we play the Doggone Safe Board game and depending on how many children there are, we may play it more than once to get through all the cards. Sometimes after we play the game, we will just shuffle the cards and draw out cards to ask the questions. We read the Diggity the Dog story book and I get them to point out on the pictures where the "bad" stuff is happening. They are given a package to take home, including a colour printout of the dog communication page to put on the fridge and the Kids and K9 activity page, along with Teresa's Bad Rules and of course some colouring pages of greyhounds . I tell them it is important not only that they learn the proper and safe way to behave around a dog, but it is also important that they let all their friends know the rules of how to behave too.
I feel that everyone even thinking about adopting any dog should have this information and hope that someday it becomes the norm instead of the exception. It benefits the humans and the dogs immensely. Deb Levasseur, CTB (the president and founder of Maritime Greyhound Adoption Program) is a certified dog behaviour therapist and gives an informative and extensive information session for the parents and other adults as well, going over all aspects of responsible dog ownership and canine behaviour. We have a great bunch of volunteers and our greyhounds go to foster families within the group, while they are waiting for their forever homes where they are all given the opportunity to learn what it is to live in a home. PALM offre une session de pré-adoption à chaque nouveau adopteur (approximativement 3 heures et plus). Vous apprendrez les habiletés et les connaissances qui vous donneront les outils nécessaires et la confiance pour atteindre le prochain niveau d’apprentissage et de formation pour l’entrainement de votre chien. Dès que vous aurez obtenus cette aptitude vous pourrez l’appliquer à diverses situations dans les années à venir.
Veuillez noter, ceci n’est pas une classe pour chiens; mais plutôt un cours pour enseigner aux propriétaires comment comprendre ce que pensent les chiens et de les entraîner efficacement. De plus, vous apprendrez tout ce qu’il y a à savoir sur les lévriers de courses retraités et vous aurez un aperçu à quoi vous attendre en ce qui concerne l’ajustement de votre animal domestique dans votre foyer. Suite à la formation, vous comprendrez de quelle façon les lévriers varient des autres races et vous aurez des trucs pour que la transition soit aussi simple et facile que possible pour le chien et votre famille. Plusieurs membres du PALM ont suivis le cours à plusieurs reprises, (gratuitement) puisqu’il est si important. Pour les gens qui ne sont pas membres du PALM, les frais pour ce cours sont de 150.00$. Par exemple, croyez-vous que les chiens ressentent la culpabilité? Font-ils des choses par rancune? Que signifie le bâillement; sont-ils fatigués? Que signifie le lèchement de lèvre? Les rides de museau? Tourner la tête? Lorsqu’il remue la queue, est-ce que ça signifie qu’il est un chien joyeux et amical? De quelle façon pense réellement les chiens? À quoi pensent-ils? Quelle est la différence comparativement à l’humain? À quoi ressemble le comportement d’un chien stressé ? De quelle façon pouvons-nous les aider à diminuer leur stress? « La politique du Programme d’Adoption de Lévrier aux Maritimes », est d’éviter l’adoption de familles avec des enfants de moins de 5 ans, alors la session sur la sécurité des chiens est pour les enfants qui se situent entre 5 et 12 ans ou même 13 ans. La première étape est de regarder le vidéo anglais« Every Picture Tells a Story. The Language of Dogs (Chaque image raconte une histoire – Le langage des chiens)». Par la suite, nous survolons la liste des « mauvais comportements et les règlements de Thérèse» et nous demandons des questions aux enfants. Nous examinons des images de chiens sécuritaires et dangereux et nous aiderons les jeunes à comprendre
la façon de distinguer leurs différences. Nous apprenons ce que veux dire « Be A Tree (Soyez un arbre) ». Nous jouons ensuite le jeu « Doggone Safe Board » et selon le nombre d’enfants, il est possible de rejouer jusqu’à l’utilisation de toutes les cartes. Quelques-fois à la suite du jeux, nous mélangerons les cartes et nous choisirons une carte au hasard afin d’offrir aux enfants de demander des questions. Nous faisons la lecture de l’histoire « Digity the Dog (le chien Digity) » et nous demandons aux jeunes de pointer sur les images où il y a quelque chose de « méchant » qui se produit. Nous donnons du matériel pour emporter à la maison, y compris une copie imprimée de la page de communication du chien qui peut être placé sur le réfrigérateur à la maison et la page d’activité pour enfants sur les chiens, avec les mauvais règlements de Thérèse. Naturellement des pages à colorier de lévriers seront aussi fournies.
