Guinness

For this year’s MGAP Dog of the Year, I would like to nominate Guinness Boyer. Owner: Michelle Boyer.
Not only has he been an ambassador for MGAP for years (every Christmas parade, every Canada Day parade, every Meet and Greet) but he is also a wonderful teacher. He taught my grey Ellie and I all about agility that he has been training in for a long time. He was also featured this year at the MGAP Picnic demonstrating his skills. He has even competed and is incredible at doing the weave poles. When he is not doing agility, he is learning complex behaviours (he can press the Staples "easy" button!) and can also do freestyle dance. One of his best moves is "Are you shy?" and he puts his paw over his face. Guinness has done many levels of obedience and is currently learning Rally-O and also flyball and doing very well in both of them.
I am often asked at the mall "are greyhounds smart or do they just lay around all the time?". It is a misnomer that these dogs are hard to train, different yes but they love to learn. Guinness is also an avid hiker and camper and shows just how adaptable they can be. Guinness has been my inspiration to get heavily into training and agility with Ellie and she has never disappointed me. She loves to learn and is very motivated and Guinness paved the way.
So this year I think you should consider Guinness for the MGAP Dog of the year.

Sonny

On Tuesday April 3rd, I received an email at work that truly broke my heart. A greyhound had snuck out of his yard in Riverview. Due to work & home commitments, my husband & I could not join the search until Thursday after work. After hours of dedication by so many MGAP members, he was successfully captured & went home with his Mom on Saturday April 7th. When we got the email that he was caught, I cried as I am sure many did. I like to believe that all our greys who are no longer with us were watching over this little guy & made sure he got home safe.
This dog really brought a group of people together that really don’t know each other well, but we all have a similar love of greys. We all meet at the picnic, Santa Claus parade, meet & greets, adoption days, liquor store fundraiser, etc…but we all worked together as a true team to bring that boy home. As greyhound owners we all know how easily they can get loose, not because they want to get away, it is just their nature. Each one of us could see ourselves in that same situation and we all knew we had to help in whatever way we could, no matter how small. We did it without prejudice, without pointing fingers & without wanting recognition. It is a reminder that we all need to be diligent every minute of every day to make sure this never happens to us. We all know how easy it can be to become relaxed and think “it won’t happen to me”, well….it can & it did.
I am truly proud to say I have been a MGAP member since 2004. I have adopted 3 greyhounds during that time & everyone was totally different & absolutely perfect. If there is any good that came out of this, it would be that one, we showed the Tri-City what an awesome group MGAP is. Two, we all need to be diligent about our own grey’s welfare at home & play. Three, that we need to purchase our own live trap, what an evasive little bugger he was…LOL…..& four, how proud we all should be to be part of MGAP…great job team!!! For this reason, I nominate Sonny as 2012 MGAP Dog of the Year

Liam

I would like to nominate Liam (John Wayne) for the following story. Somewhere around Oct. of 2011 we had been to a meet and greet and found ourselves very drawn to the grey's there, we had been considering adopting a rescue of some variety. We had lost our dog and best fried to cancer a few years before and felt that we were ready to welcome another baby into our lives(a rescue of course). We researched and read everything we could on greyhounds, even though I had worked in the animal rescue world and as an animal cruelty inspector plus was a groomer for 14 years I had never dealt with grey’s. So we went on MGAP'S site and fell completely and totally in love with a Grey named John Wayne but to my dismay I was waiting for a date for surgery so the timing was not right, we stopped looking because we already knew we were in love with this dog. I waited a couple of weeks without out going on the site but wanted to see if some lucky family had adopted him, and sure enough he was adopted as sad as I was I was happy for him.
I stayed away from the site again thinking I would start looking again after my operation but went looking again after a couple weeks and to my surprise there was MY BABY UP FOR ADOPTION again. At that point it didn't matter about an operation or why he was returned I knew he was meant to be ours ,so that same night we filled out the application and waited by the computer for a reply(thank you Deb for being so prompt) then came the online training and in-home visit and we passed all, But we told Deb if she didn't think he would be happy with us we would consider another. But I really wanted Liam, I was already in love. Then came the news that we could have him and pick him up on that Fri. BUT that his foster parents were very much in love with him to, so we sat on pins and needles and waited. Fri finely rolled around and we went to pick him up and he was everything we expected and more.
Now for the real reason I’m nominating him. They say everything happens for a reason had gained a lot of weight to the tune of 325lbs and because of this my surgery had to be postponed and I couldn't breathe very well couldn't walk much and had just mainly given up. Then along came Liam who announced every day that he needed to walk and he needed to go out every four hours and that laying around doing nothing, just wasn't what he wanted to do, so I started walking as far as the corner(not very far) and it was like he knew I was at least trying and was content with this LITTLE jaunt. After about a week of this I started to go father and again he was ok with this short distance then father and father. I’m happy to announce that since Liam came into my life I have lost 48lbs and can walk 4kms at a time. I really feel he saved my life and everything happens for a reason and that he was returned and his foster parents(thank you Angela and Warren) didn't adopt because he was meant to rescue me not the other way around. THANK YOU LIAM.

Joey

I would like to nominate Joey Jorgensen PEI (my own dog) for MGAP dog of the year.
when I first saw Joey it was love at first sight after that Joey has been by my side through everything.
What makes Joey so special is when I found out he had osteosarcoma and had to have surgery, full leg and shoulder removed, my world fell down all around me. I was on pins and needles waiting for him to come out of surgery. But Joey was so brave and strong took everything in stride. After his surgery he continued and learned to walk that night and was almost running a week later. He continued to wag his tail and just be happy about life. Something I couldn't do. He has inspire me and everyone that knows him. (ps Joey has had over 50 visitors/supporters)

Razz

Rhazz - Valid Slamo 8/13/2000 - 8/29/2011
He is still available! Rhad, he was a re-homed senior Grey. It's a sunny day in May when we met you! You were the most beautiful color blonde we have ever seen, just the perfect cup of coffee with just the right amount of cream.
Oh, the memories, we always think of you boy, how you barked when it was exactly 7:30pm, “Let’s go for a walk he would say!” He would walk and walk for hours with his sexy little swagger if we let him. He appreciated everything. Flowers, birds, trees even cats. Just mention the word car to him and he would be Dancing and hopping! I’m sure in the car he was thinking, “Wow, look how fast I am”, you could see it in his eyes, and he loved it so much.
“Let’s save The Greyhounds Rhazz” we would tell him on the way to a fundraiser, it was so amazing to watch people fall in love with him. He was so gentle and everybody could not believe how soft his fur was. He was an extremely kind Dog, he tolerated all of the fosters that came through our home and helped teach them the ways of retirement. Sadly Rhazz left us last August two weeks after his 11th birthday and will be missed forever.
Even after Rhazz left us, he did one more special act of kindness. He brought Hurcan Pepper (Zeno) back to us.
