About Us
Maritime Greyhound Adoption Program is based out of Moncton NB; the Hub of the Maritimes. We were formed in 2003 by a group of local Greyhound Adopters, who felt the need for an adoption group in this area. Our central location makes Moncton the perfect spot for the organization to be based out of. Although we are New Brunswick based, we can place Greyhounds anywhere in the Maritimes.
We, the members of this organization, have the same agenda and goals for this group. We believe in Quality of placement and not quantity and our record and reputation speak for themselves! We strive to give these amazing animals the exposure and recognition they deserve and to create awareness for the need for adoption. We work together to serve the Greyhounds to the best of our abilities.
MGAP uses and promotes strictly positive training and behavior techniques
What is "humane"?
1.Don't do to a dog what you would not want someone to do to "you".
2.Don't do to a dog what you would not do to a "child".
What is abuse?
Abuse: of dogs is using any method or tool that will cause fear, injury, or pain to the animal. It includes, physical, psychological or emotional.
MGAP is very unique and extremely fortunate to have its President, Deb Levasseur, certified as a "Canine Behavior Therapist". She offers all counseling services free of charge to ALL MGAP members. She is also certified in Canine first Aid as well as Obedience training.

So why doesn’t MGAP use a kennel?
Firstly, we want to get to know our dogs and give them the socialization and training that our well laid out fostering program provides.
*MGAP has a high success rate & therefore our need for a kennel is unnecessary.
*MGAP is passionate about providing a wonderful quality of life for the retired racers we place; as our motto states QUALITY NOT QUANTITY. A kennel environment can possibly cause your dog to feel depressed, stressed and anxious and actually stop eating or drinking. Kennelling long term, also can create a huge amount of stress on the dog through boredom, the constant noises, barking, dealing with many different dogs who are coming and going, different people, lack of exercise and mental stimulation, the spread of parasites etc….in general, it can be a very tough situation for a dog to find himself in after his racing career. This applies to the storage of "any breed of dog", and not to using the occasional good quality & well run professional kennel with paid staff, for your family vacations; these can be an EXCELLENT option.
Remember, at the tracks, they were busy, working dogs who were schooled, exercised and appeared to really enjoy racing, not simply “stored”. The tracks also have professional, paid staff to look after the dogs, 7 days a week from early AM till bedtime. Dogs need companionship, bonding, lots of play and exercise time - whether that is a walk in the park or an in door game of fetch.
All dogs need to be in a HOME with the family – not shut out in a shed or kennel. With the decline of the racing industry, kennelling them "again" after their career is now unnecessary. So if its not necessary, & better for the dogs - why use them?
**MGAP provides all this for our beloved Greys, & you can enjoy the benefits & know your grey got off to a terrific, positive start!**
