When people are looking to adopt a retired racing Greyhound, where do they turn? If you’re like most in our community, you contact Maritime Greyhound Adoption Program.
Why?
Because you know you will receive the Greyhound you are looking for, evaluated within their foster homes and matched to your lifestyle. And you also know that you’ll be treated properly by our dedicated and compassionate volunteers from the start of the process right to the adoption day.
Maritime Greyhound Adoption Program and its volunteers are committed to staying at the cutting edge of training and education for each and every Greyhound that gets the opportunity to board a hauler to Canada in the quest to find their forever home, and for every person in the community that makes the decision to adopt them.
The Maritime Greyhound Adoption Program was founded in 2003 by Deb Levasseur after a group of local Greyhound adopters felt the need for an adoption group in this area. MGAP is a registered charity that is a volunteer driven not for profit organization based out of Moncton NB; the Hub City, thus making it easy for us to place dogs anywhere within the Maritimes. We have even placed dogs as far away as Quebec and Ontario.
We strive to give these amazing Greyhounds the exposure and recognition they deserve and to create awareness for the need for adoption.
MGAP promotes and uses positive training and behavior techniques as we believe in treating all animals with respect and believe in training in a systematic and efficient force free manner.
MGAP is passionate about providing an enjoyable quality of life for the retired racers we place; as our motto states quality not quantity.
MGAP strictly uses only foster homes for our Greyhounds.
Why?
The mounting expenses involved in running a kennel aside, especially for a non profit organization, a completely different kennel environment from that which they are already accustomed to can be a very tough and confusing situation for a retired racer to find himself in immediately after his racing career. We know that at the track, they were working dogs who were schooled, exercised and enjoyed racing. The tracks have professional paid staff to care for the dogs, 7 days a week from early morning until bedtime. We feel that this isn’t possible to provide consistently and reliably within the confines of a non profit volunteer organization, which is what these retired racers require to transition properly.
In order to make successful placements, we know that we need to get to know our dogs personally and give them the socialization, consistency and training that they require during their confusing transition from racing to retirement, and our well laid out fostering program provides this for them. Our fostered Greyhounds are living in homes with other animals, children and families, thus allowing us to make accurate observations and assessments of each and every dog’s temperament and behaviour in real time situations. We feel that this is what makes our program unique and stand out from the rest.
